Just as any individual chooses what to do with their life, I have various reasons for choosing the profession of nursing as my lifelong career.
In 2010, my grandfather died at the age of eighty-four from lung cancer due to asbestos exposure when he was in the US Navy in World War II. Ina matter of four years, my grandmother fell and sustained two fractured hips. Needless to say, my family and I regularly interacted with nurses. From these experiences, I vowed that I am to help and advocate for those who are going through the hard times that comes with being sick. In September of 2019, my grandmother suffered a stroke and was hospitalized and placed in a nursing home. During her hospitalization, I acted as the liaison between my family and the medical staff. Because of my knowledge and education, I was able to better translate and ensure the smoothest transition of care for my grandmother. As I sit here and work on this portfolio, my grandmother resides in her nursing home, isolated from the outside, during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is because of my grandparents that I strive to do best in my nursing career.

Although it seems unconventional, I attribute my attitude of caring and advocacy for the patient the very same as how I did when I played football. I played on the offensive and defensive line. Our job description was simple: protect your quarterback and running backs. Aside from being aggressive and violent, a lineman protects the running back from getting hurt. Similarly, my job is to protect and advocate for my patient's right to a safe, therapeutic environment, decision-making in their plan of care, and to be free from harm.
It has been said, "Football games are one by the men upfront (lineman)". We are the hardest working individuals in the game, and endure the hardest parts of any contact sport, pain. Just as I had prepared myself physically to be a better and stronger football player, I have prepared myself for my nursing career by, not just learning the physical skills, but mentally preparing to assess, plan, and act in every and all situations.
